Genitourinary Cancer Center
Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson
The Genitourinary Cancer Center at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson is a
comprehensive research and treatment facility. Our goal is to cure prostate cancer,
maximize quality of life for patients, and advance state-of-the-art cancer treatment.
Each year more than 240,000 American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, meaning one in six
men will be diagnosed with this disease in his lifetime. Over 2 million American men alive today have
been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Philadelphia, PA is particularly hard
hit by this disease, with a death rate nearly double the national average. For more than a decade, the
Genitourinary Cancer Center at Jefferson has been providing comprehensive cancer care through our team of
urologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and experts in integrative medicine.
Led by Chair of Urology Dr. Leonard Gomella, the Genitourinary Cancer Program is a multidisciplinary
clinic where physicians and scientists work together to advance state-of-the-art treatment of patients
with the goal of curing prostate cancer and maximizing quality of life. The formation of the Genitourinary
Cancer Center allows the Kimmel Cancer Center to effectively harness the resources of its pre-eminent
radiation medicine, urology, and oncology departments; to direct research toward the root causes of prostate
cancer; and to develop less costly, less invasive treatments for men facing this disease.
The Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson was founded in 1991 and is named in honor of philanthropist
Sidney Kimmel, who has been recognized nationally for his contributions in support of cancer research.
One of only 66 National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Centers and one of only six centers in the
country designated as a Center of Excellence by FertileHOPE, the Kimmel Cancer Center is dedicated to
treating all patients with dignity. The trusted U.S. News & World Report, in its 2011 ratings
of America's Best Hospitals, ranked the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital cancer program 31st among the
best in the country. The Kimmel Cancer Center has been recognized as a Melanoma Center of Excellence and is
internationally recognized for its gastrointestinal cancer program, its new Breast Care Center, and its
innovative Stem Cell Regenerative Medicine Center.
The focus of the Kimmel Cancer Center is to translate discoveries in the genetics, cell biology,
biochemistry, structural biology, pharmacology and immunology of cancer into the novel modalities
for prevention and treatment. With more than 900members the Kimmel Cancer Center is also the
cornerstone of the Jefferson Cancer Network, a consortium of 22 hospitals and institutions in the
region dedicated to improving cancer care and clinical research.
